Not legal advice This chapter summarises what RF Studio does with data and what to watch for when sharing. It does not replace the license terms of the individual data and programs or legal advice.
RF Studio
RF Studio is closed-source freeware for non-commercial use: it is free to use and its source code is not distributed. The terms of use are set by the license agreement (EULA) you accept when installing – for the 0.11.x beta versions its version 1.2 of 22 October 2026 applies. Its text is in (Show the license agreement) and in the program folder (EULA_cs.txt, EULA_en.txt). The main points:
Non-commercial use only – for your own needs or to create sceneries and other outputs that you distribute free of charge.
Commercial use, including creating sceneries and other outputs that are sold, is permitted only with prior written consent – write to RFstudio@simulators.cz.
Files you create with the Studio belong to you; you are responsible for the rights to the input data and to distributing the results (see below).
Do not pass the beta on to other people (see Beta version).
The agreement is governed by the laws of the Czech Republic; in case of conflict between the language versions the Czech version prevails.
The application is built on open-source libraries (among others Python, FastAPI, numpy, SciPy, Shapely, rasterio, GDAL, PROJ, GEOS, py7zr, pywebview, React, three.js, MapLibre), which have their own licenses. Their list with license texts and links to the source code is in the THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.txt file in the program folder next to RFStudio.exe; you can also open it from the About window (Third-party licenses). The source code of the libraries under the LGPL and MPL licenses, in the exact versions used, is supplied in the LGPL-MPL-zdroje.zip file in the program folder and next to the installer – the authors' original source archives and, for the libraries the package authors built with vcpkg (GEOS, libiconv, SpatiaLite and FreeXL in rasterio.libs and pyogrio.libs), also the build changes from the vcpkg ports; the README.txt in the archive describes its contents and origin. The RF Studio license agreement does not limit the rights these library licenses give you. The app window uses the system Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime, which is not distributed with the app.

Laminar Research default scenery
RF Studio does not distribute Laminar data – it only reads them from your X-Plane installation.
Avoid sharing edited DSFs of the default scenery (Global Scenery) or of third-party scenery packs – it may conflict with their license.
This also applies to editor outputs: the Base copy (like terrain) is an edited DSF of the base (see Editing the base scenery) and an overlay with items imported from the default scenery contains their positions and shapes from Global Scenery.
To share your own work use a patch (.rfpatch): it contains only your edits (operations and their parameters) and the recipient replays them on their own base DSF. See Patches.
DEM, orthophoto, aerial images – every source has its own license (often personal use only or with mandatory attribution). Before you share a result or a patch with a bundled GeoTIFF, check that the license allows it. A patch has the Input note field for this.
apt.dat and Global Airports – the Studio reads airports from your installation; airport flattening changes only the terrain mesh in your new DSF.
Ortho4XP – a test package from Ortho4XP contains the textures of your pack; sharing them is governed by the license of the imagery source Ortho4XP used.
Privacy
RF Studio sends no data about you or about how you use it. A problem report is a zip you save and pass on yourself; your home folder and user name are replaced with placeholders and you see the exact content before saving.
The Studio downloads base map tiles from the chosen provider (OpenStreetMap by default); the provider sees your IP address and the map areas shown. The Offline – cache only mode in Settings › Base map turns downloading off.
The OSM import from the internet sends the Overpass server only the query (area and layers) and the application identification, and only after your confirmation; the server sees your IP address.
A place name search in the editor (Go to a place) sends the Nominatim server (OpenStreetMap) only the typed text and the application identification, and only after Enter; the server sees your IP address. Coordinates and X-Plane airports are searched offline, the Offline – cache only mode turns the internet search off.
A patch contains no paths from your computer.
A manual saved as HTML contains only the manual text.
The Studio core listens only on this computer (127.0.0.1). A request from a foreign web page opened in a browser (even one disguised through another server name) is refused, so such a page cannot read your files or start edits. The body of one request is limited to 64 MB (a patch upload checks its own limit); larger editor data (a save, a draft, validating a large change) is sent in parts, each below this limit.
Based on the RF Studio manual (F1 › Manual, version 0.11.2-beta). Post your questions and experience in this thread.

Data you supply
ATTRIBUTION_OpenStreetMap.txtinto the package and a finished package states the attribution in its README (see Validate and export). The OSM map tiles the Studio shows as a background are subject to the rules of the tile provider (the Studio downloads them sparingly, identifying the application, with a cache); for your own provider its terms and attribution apply.Privacy
