the rental company, dry and wet lease, block time, return and fuel
For rent
The AeroLease rental company has aircraft at airports around the world; in dispatch they are in the Rental tab of the selected airport. You can also rent an aircraft another player has offered. A dry lease means you pay the fuel; a wet lease has fuel in the rate and costs about 1.9× more. You may have at most 2 rented aircraft at once.
Block time and payment
When renting you choose a time from two to twenty hours. During it nobody else gets the aircraft, but you pay only after each flight by the actual block time. When it runs out the aircraft goes back by itself (in the air only after landing); return it earlier with the button in the All mine tab.
Returning elsewhere and fuel
An aircraft returned elsewhere than where you rented it has to be ferried back — the ferry is charged by the hourly rate and the distance. A rental aircraft has 50 % in its tanks; when returning a dry lease you pay for what is missing and a surplus is not refunded. You may refuel, not defuel — the fuel belongs to the owner.
Who flies and what if something happens
A rented aircraft is flown only by a player — AI crews fly only company-owned aircraft. The owner takes care of maintenance and insurance. In a crash a rented aircraft is never written off: you pay the repair and a fine of 5 % of the market value to the owner, the lease ends, the flight is without pay and the jobs on board fail.
Flight costs
what is paid at dispatch, after landing and once a month
At dispatch
The fuel the flight needs — the minimum for the leg, the alternate and 45 minutes of reserve, plus a small margin —, is bought at the departure airport; what is already in the tanks is not bought again. The price follows the world price (2.35 $ per gallon of JET-A, 6.10 $ per gallon of AVGAS), a remote airport is up to 35 % dearer and world events move the price. Parking at the airport (the first two hours free) is paid at departure.
After the flight is closed
The landing fee and handling grow with the aircraft MTOW and the airport category: a hub (T0) charges 3.20×, a large airport (T1) 2.00×, a regional one (T2) 1.10×, a small one (T3) 0.50× and a grass strip (T4) 0.15× the base rate. On top come passenger handling, cargo handling, route charges by distance and weight, the board commission of 7 % of job revenue, the FBO route share for a job from someone else's route and the AI crew wage. Jet types whose production started before 1990 pay 50 % more for landing and handling at T0 and T1. Outside the opening hours of a small airport there is a surcharge of 80 $ + 25 $ per tonne of MTOW.
Maintenance fund
For every flight hour an amount goes into the aircraft maintenance fund — the more, the heavier the aircraft and the more demanding the engines (piston, turboprop, jet). Repairs and checks are then paid from the fund, so maintenance cost spreads over the flights instead of arriving at once. An aircraft older than ten years pays more (see Maintenance). An unused fund is refunded on sale to the dealer or after a write-off.
Once a month
The month close takes the insurance premium (a yearly rate of 1.3 % of hull value, a twelfth per month; good reputation makes it cheaper and bad reputation dearer by up to 25 %), depreciation of owned aircraft, pilot wages, lot rent, facility running costs and income tax at the rate of the home airport country. An owned aircraft therefore costs money even when it does not fly — work it out before you buy one.
Where you see it
The briefing before dispatch shows what leaves at once (fuel, parking) and an estimate for the whole flight. The flight detail in the Logbook breaks down the actual costs by item and Finance has every movement in the general ledger.
Flight without a job. An empty ferry anywhere — an ICAO code or a click on the map — and a local flight back for circuits or training. You pay fuel and fees, the hours count.
